No other episode could justifiably top this list. It contains the scene that, when Benioff and Weiss read it in the books, they knew they had to adapt the material to television. The chapter that Martin himself couldnt bear to write and supposedly wrote last when he wrote A Storm of Swords. The Red Wedding. Kudos to Benioff and Weiss for starting off the slaughter by shocking even the most learned book reader and killing off Talisa, as well as her unborn child with Robb, as her book counterpart Jayne Westerling wasnt present at the Twins. This was also a surprise because Benioff and Weiss were subtly dropping hints all season that she may have been a double agent working for the Lannisters and seducing Robb, leading to his downfall with Walder (the old Honeypot). The very end where Catelyn Starks throat was cut was met by a soundtrack of silence, which continued throughout the credits. Even for those who knew what was coming, this was chilling. The Rains of Castamere was the episode that brought this show from being a very good one to one of HBOs best ever. Thoughts on this list? Leave a comment below and tweet reactions to @PocketSeagull.
