5. Zima Blue
Incredibly profound and deeply poignant, Zima Blue tells the story of a journalist who is going to meet the illusive and exceptional titular artist. The short tells Zima's story as understood by the public before Zima tells his own side of the story. Zima Blue tackles large concepts and predominantly sticks the landing making it one of the most thought provoking shorts in the collection.
Zima's art is mural based which began reaching ludicrous sizes. He was known for an abstract blue shade that would appear in all his murals and would slowly start to take over the whole piece. The murals become such gigantic sci-fi structures for Zima's lofty ambitions of the cosmos that it is impressive the short manages to ground itself so well by the end.
It may not work for everyone, but Zima Blue is trying to achieve something emotional and that should be commended here. The animation style is almost Samurai Jack-like making it appealing in its simplicity.
