Recasting The Stargate Atlantis Reboot
1. Paul Rudd As Lt. Colonel Sheppard
While Dr. Weir is the brains of the whole Atlantis operation, Lt. Colonel Sheppard, played by Joe Flanigan, is the arm. He led his team through the Stargate every day trying to fight off the wraith, learn about the Ancients, encounter friendly and hostile human colonies, keep his team alive, and help as many innocents as he could.
There is plenty of arguing about how Sheppard was just a rip-off of the original Stargate's Jack O'Neil. However, Sheppard tends to have a deeper outlook on his past actions in the military, and during his leadership on Atlantis. Sheppard also had a tendency to delve into dark places when needed to save someone's life or complete his mission.
This is why one of the best actors to portray Commander Sheppard in a reboot is Paul Rudd. Paul Rudd has plenty of experience with comedy, but playing Colonel Sheppard could give him a chance to delve deeper into a serious role, with Sheppard's willingness to do the hard thing clashing with the morality of many of the rest of Atlantis' crew to create a compelling and complex character.
Paul Rudd may not be the best actor for Sheppard in terms of stuntwork and being one of the most popular actors in the world, but his overall character makes him a perfect fan cast for Atlantis' reboot.
And you never know, television can be greater than movies in terms of storytelling, and that is always attractive to actors looking to play different characters with intriguing moralities and stories.
