Red Dwarf Season 11: 6 Reasons To Be Excited

2. More Time To Work On Scripts

As already noted, Series X, while enjoyable, was far from perfect. It's storylines were interesting (especially Lemons and The Beginning), and it featured a few laugh-out-loud moments, but many of its jokes fell a little flat. Back To Earth was an enjoyable little mini-series, but it was effectively a storyline copied from a previous episode and Blade Runner, and lacked any really funny jokes. Overall the two seasons suggested a return to the style that had served the first 6 series so well, however - probably more so that VII and VIII. The return to that style, studio audience included, should be maintained in Series XI, and promisingly Naylor has had far more time to work on the ideas this time round. Although there were 10 years between VIII and IX, much of that period was spent working on a movie that never materialised, and it felt like some of the ideas and jokes that cropped up in X were hurried out to capitalise on the ratings that Back To Earth received. Naylor has had several years to construct a suitable sequel to X, and he has seen what worked and what didn't in the new episodes. That should provide an opportunity to craft a season that may match up to the show's heyday moments. Plus, of course, there is no rush with the shooting schedule this time. As stated earlier, the cast are back in full and have relinquished other commitments in order to focus on Red Dwarf. That should mean that the series is able to develop naturally and the jokes are given the time required to get them right.
