3. ‘Saw’ The Vindicators
Though Dan Harmon apparently counts the Vindicators amongst his least favourite characters, they gave us a great insight into Rick’s mind.
When we meet them, it’s clear that Rick & Morty have in fact met them before. Morty idolises them as superheroes, while Rick dislikes and distrusts them. Teamwork has never really been his forte, after all. So rather than work together, he constructs a ‘Saw’ style torture dungeon, designed to put them through hell in order to escape.
In fairness to Rick, he does this while drunk and ends up trapped in there with them. He doesn’t even remember the solutions to some of his puzzles, relying on Morty understanding his drunken rambles. There is some sweetness in seeing how well Morty knows his grandpa, but that’s undercut by the various brutal deaths of the Vindicators.
If there was any saving grace here, it’s that when Rick talks about Israel, he’s merely pointing out that it has a complex geopolitical climate and says nothing sketchy. Oh, and it ends with a touching monologue about the reason why he hates the Vindicators is because they’re taking away the person he loves most. Not Morty though. He’s talking about the janitor, Noob Noob.
