Riverdale: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best

12. Reggie Mantle

Reggie Mantle has had quite the journey on Riverdale thus far. Initially played by Ross Butler in the first season, he didn't appear all that often but whenever you saw Reggie, he could be either pretty decent or pretty moody - a trend that would continue when the character's role was increased.

Butler's 13 Reasons Why duties resulted in him leaving the show, allowing Charles Melton to take his place from Season 2 onwards. From there, Reggie would get more involved in the show's core storylines, but never to a degree worthy of the actors that played him. He may be a regular part of Riverdale now, but his role just feels like an extension of his Season 1 recurring role - he shows up to serve a purpose when the writers require him to, even if that purpose doesn't line-up with his previous one.

Remember when he randomly decided to attack the Serpents and wanted to kill Fangs? What about when he served as the predictably interim boyfriend for Veronica during her break with Archie? Reggie has so much potential (the storyline with his father showed real promise) but it is rarely explored and, instead, the character is written as a recurring obstacle or handyman or whatever else the plot requires him to be.

Both Butler and Melton have done great jobs bringing their own interpretations of Reggie to life and, when the writing is on the money, the character is one of the show's most enticing. The problem is that his conflicting behavior makes it hard to take him seriously as a real character - and, in all honesty, he deserves better.
