Schitt's Creek: 10 Best Standalone Episodes

5. Allez-vous - S1E8

Everyone has that one friend desperate or gullible enough to be sucked into some MLM. Unfortunately for the Roses, Johnny is the one with the head for business - and he's not around to dissuade his wife and son when they fall for the lucrative-sounding scheme of Allez-vous.

Where a lot of comedy shows fall into the trap of spelling out their gags, Schitt's Creek has the uncanny skill of just leaving things up for the viewer to infer. It makes us feel like one of the townspeople watching events unfurl instead of a detached bystander, and Allez-vous does this the best.

David's nonchalant application of some sunless bronzer is as unsuspecting as they come, but by the next scene we find out it was a subtle set up for punchline all too familiar for anyone who's had a marketer get all up in their face with a new beauty regime. Beware of any tanning agent that claims to give a 'natural, sun-kissed glow' because, like David, you'll probably end up looking like POTUS 45.

Early Schitt's Creek showed the Roses doing anything to get out of the town, up to and including this pyramid scheme. It's fortunate that the family eventually learn proper business practices - and form a genuine relationship with the place that supported them when they needed it most.
