Sherlock: 10 "Mouthwatering Ideas" For Upcoming One-Off Special

8. A Sherlock-Lite Episode

Since its revival in 2005, Doctor Who has often been filmed with two episodes being shot simultaneously. This has resulted in the 'Doctor-lite' episodes, in which the Doctor or his companions don't drive the main story, allowing the actors to work on other episodes. While the quality of these stories vary from the excellent (Blink) to the excremental (Love and Monsters), it would be interesting to see whether the same structure would work on Moffat's other show. Before you dismiss the notion as impossible, it is not without precedent in the Holmes canon. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes is absent for long periods of time, with the story being led by Dr. Watson's investigations on Dartmoor. With John being increasingly aware of Sherlock's methods and "tricks", he deserves another opportunity to try them out, either on his own or with Mary. The only downside is that if a Sherlock-lite episode turns out to be good (and I mean Blink levels of good), it will only increase the pressure on the writers to make more episodes.
