The Simpsons: 12 Guest Stars Who Surprisingly Parodied Themselves

6. Mel Gibson

Episode: Beyond Blunderdome After Homer is the only person to complain at a preview screening of Gibson's remake of Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, the director is impressed by his honesty and invites him to Hollywood to work on the re-edit. Following on from the not at all surprising revelation that he wasn't the man to design the best futuristic car, it turns out that Homer isn't the most gifted filmmaker; choosing to replace the original ending with a nonsensical action scene in which Mr. Smith impales a Senator, decapitates the President and leaves the audience with a close-up of a villainous dog with shifty eyes. Gibson, however, stands by the film - despite the studios threatening to ban it, prophetically showing the kind of "commitment" that would later reflect badly on his name. This leads to a bizarre car chase through the streets of Hollywood, in which Homer and Gibson (in a nod to Braveheart) moon the studio executives; showing that, even in cartoon form, Gibson can't keep his trousers on.
