The Simpsons: 12 Guest Stars Who Surprisingly Parodied Themselves
5. Lady Gaga
Episode: Lisa Goes Gaga No celebrity guest star has dominated an entire episode of The Simpsons quite like Lady Gaga. From the second the Gaga Express train storms into Springfield, it's a relentless sprawl of wry self-parody/ flagrant self-promotion (delete as appropriate) in which everything you've ever associated with Gaga has been condensed into twenty-two minutes. This includes her beloved 'Little Monsters' fanbase, trademark theatricality, no less than eighteen costume changes (with Homer nibbling away at the infamous meat dress) and a completely gratuitous kiss with Marge. She arrives in Springfield as something of a Messianic figure, motivating everyone from Moe to Comic Book Guy with her music and 'be yourself' messages, in a bid to rid the town of its collective sense of low self-esteem. Lisa, however, is not convinced that a couple of songs and a sprinkling of glitter can patch over her problems and so she denounces the guest star for ''giving people ambitions they cannot fulfil,'' but then, after an uncharacteristic change of heart, she too finds herself unable to resist Gaga's charms and so ends the episode singing a duet with her. While some viewers commended Gaga for embracing the more cartoonish elements of her stage persona, others were less than thrilled to see our favourite family forced to take a back seat as the Gaga Express train brought Springfield to a standstill.
