The Simpsons: 12 Shockingly Depressing Character Backstories
8. Nelson Muntz
20th Century FoxIt may at first be hard to sympathise with Nelson Muntz when the fourth grader has been bullying Bart Simpson (and practically every child in Springfield) since his series debut in Bart The General some 14 years ago. However, if you can see past his physically domineering exterior it is clear that Nelson acts as he does because of his disheartening past. Nelson has no paternal or strong maternal figure to advise him on how to behave. The top-dog of Springfield Elementarys father went to pick up some Pop-Tarts and tragically never came back. Muntz absentee father is arguably no worse than his stripper mother however. We see Nelson spending his formative years in a dilapidated shack. It is because of Nelsons shoddy lot in life that all the Simpsons women (other than Maggie, obviously) have a soft spot for him. In Lisa's Date with Density she becomes Muntz girlfriend while in Sleeping with the Enemy Marge practically adopts the bully as her own. Its hard to judge Nelson too harshly when he has clearly been so negatively impacted by the sudden departure of his papa. It may not be part of the proper Simpsons canon but in Bart to the Future Muntz is show to grow up to be a wealthy bar owner; we can only hope this future proved to be true.
