The Simpsons: 12 Shockingly Depressing Character Backstories
7. Homer Simpson
20th Century FoxWho would have thought that one of the main characters of all people the happy-go-lucky Homer Simpson had one of the most depressing background stories? The loveable oaf that is Homer Simpson had a less than ideal childhood. Despite his dad, Abe, clearly loving Homer as is shown in many episodes, he was less fond of him as a child. After Homer returned from Woodstock festival and expressed a desire to adopt the hippie lifestyle, Abe tried to send him to the Vietnam War despite Homer only being a young child. His issues with his father werent the only bad thing in Homers childhood. His mother abandoned him and Abe after having a run in with the law, leaving Homer to miss out on his mothers love for such a long time. Homer also managed to impair himself as a child by shoving several crayons up his nose, one of which got stuck and caused Homer to have a permanently lowered IQ. A ridiculous amount of head trauma from falling down Springfield gorge (Bart the Daredevil) and getting the stuffing knocked out of him by Drederick Tatum (The Homer They Fall) have surely lowered this IQ even more. At several points in Homer's deceptively depressing life he has contemplated suicide. In 'Homer's Odyssey' everything almost becomes too much for poor Homer and he verges on committing suicide and in 'Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind' he stands over the edge of the bridge ready to jump. Homer is also forced to suffer through a job that he hates for a boss who doesnt even know his name. Its all for his family though the main factor which prevented Homer from appearing higher on the list.
