Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Cerritos You Need To Know
8. Live And Let Livery
As mentioned, over the course of Star Trek: Lower Decks season one, the crew of the USS Cerritos interacts with numerous other California-class starships. In the grand Trek-tradition of reusing and recycling starship models and sets, these other California-class ships are identical to the Cerritos, save for a couple of minor touches.
The interiors of the USS Merced, USS Rubidoux, USS Solvang, and USS Alhambra are all identical to that of the Cerritos, except the color schemes have been changed, notably on the LCARS-style computer interfaces (the Cerritos' LCARS is orange, the Merced's is green, the Solvang's is blue, etc.)
Similarly, the exteriors of these California-class ships have been given multi-colored markings on their hulls, a deviation from the traditionally red Starfleet livery.
Considered a "visual metaphor" for the iconic command red, sciences blue, and services yellow Starfleet uniforms, California-class starships are similarly divided up into divisions by color. The Cerritos' distinctive yellow striping signifies that it's a starship tasked with engineering-specific "second contact" missions, the USS Merced's blue markings in "Moist Vessel" indicate she's a science-oriented ship, and the red markings of the USS Rubidoux and Solvang in "Much Ado About Boimler" and "No Small Parts" indicate that those ships perform command-level missions.
