4. Benedict Cumberbatch
The latest and indeed one of the greatest villains in the Star Trek universe is John Harrison, the sly intelligent adversary of Kirk and co. in the new instalment 'Into Darkness'. Much has been said of Benedict Cumberbatch's very dark depiction of this vengeful terrorist. Not once has this been over-stated. Modern day cinema is replete with awkward castings in the role of 'the baddie' but in this case the casting guys got it spot-on. He brings a fresh and believably likeness to the character. He knows exactly when to be theatrically quiet and yet manages to stand out effectively even in a scene full of activity and dialogue. His grip on the actors around him leaves you with a sense of intrigue as to what exactly is going through his mind. What will he do next? You really can't take your eyes off him. Given the twists and turns that the character makes throughout Into Darkness, Cumberbatch successfully conveys the necessary tones to make you feel exactly how he wants the Enterprise crew to feel. It is essentially a mental and emotional play-off between him and Kirk. If you have not yet seen Into Darkness, you'll enjoy this balance between good and evil as it crosses over and bounces back and forth between Cumberbatch and Pine.
