Star Trek: 9 Ways Strange New Worlds Re-Imagined The Gorn

1. Gorn Attacks May Be Driven By Environmental Factors

La'an Noonien-Singh considers the Gorn "plain evil" and impossible to empathize with or understand. However, considering her history, she might be biased.

The Gorn Hegemony claims territory in the Beta Quadrant but unlike the politically motivated Klingons and Romulans, the motives for the Gorn's sudden and devastating attacks on Federation territory are unclear. Are they in search of food? Shoring up their borders? Being driven out of their own territory by some unknown and even more powerful enemy? Or, are they as La'an has suggested, just plain evil?

During the attack on Parnassus Beta, Montgomery Scott and Sam Kirk speculated about the reasons behind Gorn attacks. According to Mr. Scott, his ship the USS Stardiver was in a red giant's solar system studying solar flares when the Gorn destroyed the ship. He suspected the Gorn were driven to attack by the red giant's coronal mass ejections. Connecting their use of light as a communication medium to coronal mass ejection, Sam Kirk speculated that the coronal mass ejection drove them into a frenzy in much the same way that locusts are driven to swarm by environmental factors such as overpopulation.
