Star Trek Characters That Need To Meet Each Other (Somehow)

4. Ro Laren And Kira Nerys

ro and kira

This seems now like an obvious pairing that but for the grace of career directions, never took place. And let us be clear at the outset - no body, no death. Ro’s fine.

She’s fine, ok?

Ro Laren was the character template for Kira Nerys in the early days of production on Emissary. Michelle Forbes was offered the chance to play Ro, but declined an ongoing series at that time. Nana Visitor then originated the role of Nerys, who would go on to become one of the two most important Bajorans in Star Trek’s history.

The parallels between both, then, are clear. Ro went from refugee, to Starfleet officer, to prisoner, to return and then betrayal. By the time Kira was second in command of Deep Space Nine, Ro’s future looked uncertain, though her time in the Maquis came to an end before their eventual destruction by the Dominion.

Kira’s journey has similar beats, but comes from another direction entirely. Though closely allied with Starfleet, she was, for the most part, a member of the Bajoran militia solely, bar one field commission in the last days of the Dominion War. Both characters had been freedom fighters, or terrorists depending on who is describing them. Both had lost family members early, and both had to learn to survive within the rigid confines of Starfleet’s rules.

Having the pair of them share Hasperat and war stories would be the ultimate treat for those of us who have followed both of their journeys over the years.
