Star Trek Discovery: 10 Awesome Villains They Should've Used Instead
5. Xindi
Discovery is, of course, a prequel to the Original Series, but it’s important to remember that it’s also a sequel to Enterprise, somewhat the black sheep of the franchise. While references have been made and easter eggs have featured to assure fans that the until now, most recent Trek series hasn’t been forgotten, what better way to bridge the gap between the two newest shows in Star Trek canon than by including the former’s most famous villains?
The multi-faceted, multiracial Xindi were last seen being foiled in their fiendish plot to destroy Earth from their comfy abode in the Delphic Expanse. Then formed as a result of the Xindi/United Earth War, the Coalition of Planets acted as a precursor to the United Federation of Planets that we know and love from all Trek series onwards.
With Discovery in the thick of a Klingon War, further reference to another pivotal war in Starfleet’s history would be rife with thematic potential. An actual appearance by a Xindi, in any form, could represent a reminder of Earth’s past and reinforce the need to band together in the face of adversity and strife.
Alternatively, a portrayal of a Xindi as an ally would illuminate the potential for overcoming hostility and ultimately making peace with any foe, something that we know will eventually happen with the fearsome Klingons.
With a beautiful nod to Jonathan Archer as one of Starfleet’s most decorated captains, could more nuggets from his era be around the corner in an even more significant way?
