Star Trek: Everything We NOW Know About The Burn

The century that followed the Burn saw the Alpha and Beta Quadrants become a vastly different landscape. With entire civilisations leaving the Federation and others decimated by the explosions, the rise in isolationism and opportunism was inevitable.

Organisations like the Emerald Chain and the Venari Ral stepped into the vacuum, laying the groundwork for a new, darker coalition of worlds. Even with the discovery of Su'Kal and the return of warp drive, Starfleet didn't bounce back overnight. In many ways, the galaxy had returned to the wild west of Archer and Kirk's days.

When Nus Braka took control of the USS Athena's atrium, broadcasting his show trial to the galaxy, he initially gained support from various worlds. Though Captain Ahke successfully argued in Starfleet and the Federation's defence, the fact that Braka was able to do the things that he did displayed a universe that was far from the utopian days of Starfleet's past.

With Ni'Var, Betazed, Trill, and Earth all rejoining the Federation, and New Qo'Nos in Federation space, it seems now imperative not simply to protect the galaxy against another material explosion like the Burn, but also to address the other factors that came from the fallout of that disaster. While the hope for a brighter tomorrow still burns bright through Starfleet and beyond, complacency can be as deadly as any warp core breach, and as far-reaching as any galactic event.
