3. Down - The On-The-Nose, Oversimplified Feminism
Supergirl is a female-led superhero show, which unfortunately in 2015 is a rather rare occurrence, and understandably that idea of a woman or girl being a hero feeds directly into the show. It's part of its entire message. When it's a bit more subtle with this - see Alex taking down the man towards the end of the episode - it can work really well, and in the grand scheme of the future of female superheroes this show could be quite important, and hopefully it'll succeed on that front. However, it does itself a disservice by cheapening its message with some pretty on-the-nose, simple 'feminism'. This happened last week, and once again it's Cat Grant who's the perpetrator here. Starting the #Terriblegirl trend, she's overly critical of Supergirl's efforts, stating that she has to do more because she's female, and that as a result she hasn't been good enough so far. I understand what they're trying to say, but it doesn't come across all that well. In a show that can carry such a strong feminist message in so many other ways, these moments are at best unnecessary, and at worst feel a bit cheap.
