Supernatural knows how to execute amazing finales with Season Three being no exception. After the season was cut short due to the 2007 – 2008 writers' strike, the finale did something the two previously never showed before – the Winchesters failed and all hope was lost.
As time was running out for Dean it seemed as if the Winchesters had a chance they would be able to find a loophole in which Dean didn’t have to be dragged into Hell. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful. Dean was killed and sent to Hell as payment for selling his soul to save Sam in Season Two.
It was a bold move for the show to kill off their two main characters in a finale right after each other, but after knowing that somehow Dean was able to bring Sam back to life, fans were eager to find out how Sam would be able to resurrect his brother from the pits of Hell.
The closing image of Dean hung and tortured as he calls out in terror for Sam makes for a powerful cliffhanger, one the show has only been able to top twice in the seasons after.
