Supernatural’s first dip into meta territory, The Monster at the End of This Book introduced Supernatural into the Supernatural universe in the most perfect way possible. This is the episode which introduced viewers to Chuck Shurley as a Prophet of the Lord, later to be revealed as God himself.

Although not known at the time, this episode is the first clue that Sam and Dean’s lives were being controlled by God as they never truly had the free will they believed they did. This episode also marks the first time we see Lilith in the flesh as she tries to seduce Sam into joining her on her mission in setting Lucifer free.

The joke of creators inserting themselves into their shows was especially funny when Chuck acknowledged the egotistical nature of a writer doing this – it makes it funnier when you realise Chuck was meant to represent Supernatural's creator Eric Kripke or the pen name Chuck uses for himself, Carver Edlund, is created after the Supernatural writers Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund.

The brothers make subtle digs at the fans of the show without ever making fun of them with Dean stating there are 'Sam girls' and 'Dean girls' and slash fans, but also making fun of the show itself by referencing the notoriously terrible episode bugs. The Monster at the End of This Book was just the beginning of Supernatural becoming self-aware and making subtle (and not so subtle) digs at itself.
