Teen Titans Revival: 10 Reasons It Will Be Better Than Titans
1. Seasons 1-5 Already Nailed The Perfect Tone
The main thing that made the first five seasons of Teen Titans so enjoyable and so immensely special was the show's tone. It had a fun, lighthearted feel to it, but also wasn't afraid to go to some rather dark places. Robin's mental instability while pursuing Slade, Terra's betrayal and initial demise, and Raven's self-destructive battle against Trigon are just a few examples of the dark themes the show tackled.
What's more is that the carefree side of the series was incredibly important when it came to making the serious side work, as the disparity greatly helped in conveying the gravity of certain situations across.
This yin and yang relationship seems to be completely lost on Titans, which has instead opted to go the homogenized, needlessly dour place DC can't seem to get away from these days. This tone works for some characters, sure, but when you force it on a team like the Titans, you take away half of what makes them so entertaining to watch. (Even the DC Animated Original Movies, which themselves were geared towards an older audience, understood this).
To give just one example, Teen Titans was able to use this tonal disparity, as well as some slow-burn storytelling, to portray Robin's angst in a way that was infinitely more effective and nuanced than having him pop in and say "f**k Batman" will ever be.
Ultimately, in trying way too hard to make a "gritty" show "for adults", DC has seemingly lost sight of what makes the Titans such a unique group. In response to this, the team from the animated series have seemingly heard the proverbial cry for help and are coming to save the day.
