For the first few seasons of the show, the comedy quota of The Big Bang Theory leaned very heavily on Jim Parsons as Sheldon. It wasn’t until Amy showed up in season four that the load was properly lightened. Mayim Bialik gives a bravura turn as the complex Amy, one of the characters who gets to evolve the most over the course of the run.

Amy debuted on The Big Bang Theory as the closest thing we had to a female version of Sheldon, logical to a fault, but blossoms into a caring and loveable figure. The love story between the two is probably the best thing the show ever did, a slow burn in which it’s easy to invest, and the heavy lifting is done by Amy’s youthful glee every time Sheldon shows the least bit of genuine affection.

Comedically, though, she remains dynamite throughout, whether it’s hijacking Bernadette’s wedding when declared maid of honour or everything surrounding her arranged annual coitus with Sheldon. Amy is able to mesh hilariously with every member of the cast and unlike Sheldon, never becomes overbearing.
