Remember the whole will they/won€™t they situation with Ross and Rachel in F.R.I.E.N.D.S? Even Leonard and Penny have had their on screen disputes. Occasional breakups keep us, as an audience, engaged. We want to watch to see what will happen. This is absent in the case of Sheldon and Amy because we take it for a given that they will be together, basically because it does not look like anyone else will be with them. If they were to breakup we would watch further to find out whether this is a permanent breakup or just a break. ShAmy has somewhat stagnated as we all expect them to be together as a lasting couple, so it would act as a shock to the audience if the breakup occurred. This would keep the show unpredictable, and it would ensure that audiences remain engaged in the program, especially when you consider that the show is going to have at least another three seasons.
