The Boys Season 1: 9 Questions In Desperate Need Of Answers
4. Will The Deep Have A Redemption Arc?
The Boys’ answer to Aquaman, The Deep, is a bit of a dick. With his introduction to the show seeing him groom, threaten, and presumably sexually assault Starlight, this is an undeniable fact. He’s a cocky douchebag who thinks he’s untouchable because he’s an established member of The Seven.
However, after Starlight publicly outs him for his actions, The Deep soon gets his just deserts. Looking to avoid a PR nightmare, Madelyn Stillwell relocates him to Ohio, in order to keep him out of the public eye.
Whilst there, he himself is sexually abused by a crazed fan who sees him as a freak. During an encounter, she forcefully shoves her fists into his gills, despite his protesting. (It’s a strange show.) This experience and discovering he’s not welcome to return to New York is enough to send him into a heavy depression.
Is there room for redemption for The Deep yet though? Due to a hilariously botched effort to rescue a dolphin from captivity, we know he’s an animal lover. Was his own experience with abuse enough to change his attitude and outlook? It’ll be interesting to see what the writers do with this character as the show goes on.
