2. The Rise Of Bobbie Draper

Life on the always-changing canvas of The Expanse is nothing if not unpredictable, but Gunnery Sergeant Roberta Draper’s path has been more mercurial than most: As a decorated member of the Martian Marine Corps, she was fiercely loyal to her planet, its military, and all of its operations. That perspective began to shift after her first encounter with the protomolecule, and it was truly turned on its head after her unsanctioned walk through Earth’s lower-class underbelly. The turmoil of being asked to lie by her government led to questions about loyalty, and a brief stint with a criminal gang (to say nothing of her time with the Rocinante’s crew) left her questioning if there was anyone in the system whom she could trust.

Following Nancy Gao’s election to the role of Secretary-General of the United Stations, Bobbie reached out to Chrisjen Avasarala about her previous offer of a job. While her timing did – in Avasarala’s words – suck, this latest decision puts the former soldier on the path toward once again being on the “right” side of the law… although her discovery of a government-spanning conspiracy may once again prompt her to wonder if she has aligned herself with the most upstanding team.

Fans of the books know what is likely on the horizon, but the television incarnation of Bobbie Draper is nonetheless slated to bring some surprises to Season 5. Becoming a key player and being torn between two (literal) worlds – and having a third one constantly gunning for her – will put the sergeant-turned-outlaw in the uncomfortable position of having to frequently turn traitor as she strives to champion whatever sort of peace might be possible. It will be difficult enough when she has to choose between factions… and when her friends get involved, all bets are off.
