When John Walker was given the Captain America shield, there were many reasons for it. He had an exemplary service history, he was the only American with three medals of honour to his name, and he passed every physical test that was thrown his way.

However, it has become abundantly clear throughout the series that it also had a lot to do with the way he looked. Clearly it was important how he was presented, as he even complained himself that all the job was to start with was handshakes, speeches, and senator meetings. His aesthetic fit the bill, and this even came down to how he handled the shield.

In the video package shown on Good Morning America, he could be seen practicing with the shield, and it's hard to say that it wasn't impressive. At the time, it may have even had some MCU fans thinking if they had maybe judged the character too harshly previously.

However, Sam Wilson has put in the hard work and practice to get to grips with the shield too. He may have struggled at first, as anyone in the world would have, but by the end of episode five he seemed to have a very good grasp on the shield and how to use it effectively. This may have been the only area that he was lacking in terms of being a fit for Captain America, but now he is the whole package and is ready to go.
