The Last Kingdom: 10 Things That Must Happen In Season 4
9. Power Struggles
Following the death of Alfred The Great, Wessex is in utter political turmoil. Beset by enemies on all sides, it will be interesting to watch the young King Edward's struggles with the responsibilities of the crown. The ending of Season 3 strongly hinted that his mother Aelswith will vie for control of the Witan with his father-in-law Aethelhelm, a powerful earldorman of Wessex who seeks to extend his influence over the court. However, Aelswith only lived for 3 years after the death of Alfred (unless the show tinkers with historical accuracy for the sake of story) but she is a great adversary for our beloved protagonist.
Historically Edward The Elder reined for 25 years. The relationship between Uhtred and Alfred was integral to the plot of the first three seasons, so it's inevitable that the relationship between Uhtred and the children of Alfred will be key to the plot of future seasons and the conquest of England. Although the siblings are close, if disputes over territory arise will Uhtred choose to side with Edward of Wessex or will he side with Aethelflaed of Mercia?
The show really needs a new Saxon antagonist to fill the void left by Harry McEntire's Machiavellian Aethelwold. Villains on both warring sides make the show so satisfying to watch as they add to the struggle over power and politics.
