(Season 6-7, Episode 25-1) One of The Simpsons' biggest events was the Who Shot Mr Burns two-parter which ended season six and began the seventh season. As ever, the whole thing was a parody - this time of classic soap opera Dallas. Likewise, that show had a cliffhanger ending to a season which saw JR Ewing get shot by an unseen assailant, before the culprit was revealed the next season. The show went all out for this spoof, creating a genuinely intriguing whodunnit with actual clues hidden within the narrative (Mr Burns collapsing on the sun dial, for instance). It was all done as a publicity stunt, of course, but it is still one of The Simpsons' cleverest TV parodies. There was also some ribbing of Dallas' ridiculous storylines, such as when Smithers dreams Mr Burns hasn't been shot - a reference to when Dallas explained away a whole season of the show as a dream.
