What turned Sideshow Bob into the hapless criminal we all know and love wasn't actually Bart, but Krusty the Clown, his former boss who constantly disrespected and belittled him on TV with little praise.
In Day of the Jackanapes, this grudge comes back with an hilarious vengeance, as Krusty reveals he's deleted all of Bob's work on the show, causing his disgruntled former assistant to fit Bart with a bomb that will kill both the boy and the clown.
A brilliant spoof of The Manchurian Candidate, the episode's also a striking reminder that Bob, for all his big talk, only ever wanted to be acknowledged. Also, Grammer's reading of the line "Oh no, my boy bomb" might be his funniest delivery in the role.
Day of the Jackanapes is Sideshow Bob at his most devious and The Simpsons at its most effortlessly enjoyable. These were the days.
