The Walking Dead: Every Season 3 Episode Ranked Worst To Best

8. When The Dead Come Knocking

The Walking Dead
AMC

All told, season three remains one of The Walking Dead's most harrowing chapters, thanks in equal part to its cruel villain and willingness to hurt its characters in the most extreme ways.

In When the Dead Come Knocking, Glenn and Maggie are brought to Woodbury and torturously interrogated by Merle. Glenn is almost fed to a walker, whilst The Governor threatens Maggie with a level of menace rarely seen by a villain since.

Though an undeniably horrible episode - tough to watch and mostly hopeless save for a brief scene where Carol is revealed to be alive and meets baby Judith - When the Dead Come Knocking develops Glenn and Maggie's worldview and relationship with excellent results, and finally introduces Michonne to the rest of the group.

Phenomenally performed and immeasurably intense, the fact that the episode ranks in the middle of the pack is a testament to the strength of the rest of the season.
