Earl (John Finn) never really got over the death of his wife Tammy Rose, and was constantly looking for a fight against the Whisperers.
When the time came, he fought in the Battle of Hilltop and afterwards led Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming) and the other kids to safety. However, it's soon revealed that he was bitten during the fight, and he tries to kill himself before he reanimates.
He fails, but Judith is on hand to deal with him when he turns, thoroughly traumatising her.
