The Walking Dead Season 11 Review - 5 Ups & 3 Downs From "Lockdown"
4. Up - Negan Meets Mercer
After hanging around with his former enemies for so long, Negan finally got to speak to someone new. Although, Mercer may not be exactly be the best conversationalist.
In order to help protect everyone both inside and outside of the Commonwealth's walls, Negan deliberately gets picked up by the soldiers for the chance to speak with him. Taking nothing lightly, Mercer's interrogation with Negan soon turns itself on its head as he questions the General's allegiance and respect for the society's rules.
Mercer may appear as a tough person to negotiate with, but Negan's confidence and persuasion are on a whole other level that Jeffrey Dean Morgan superbly delivers. Seeing him from the first half of the season question his own men and place in the world, Negan's words and irritable attitude certainly strike him more than Lucille ever could.
How the relationship between the two from this initial meeting will grow is hard to say, but this scene was exciting to see as Mercer's loyalty and devotion to the cause were questioned and tested by someone who knows all too well the false promises of being a leader. With a crooked smile and some truthful words, Negan manages to convincingly make his way through the man and leave him in doubt as he walks straight through the front door.
