The Walking Dead Season 11 Review - 6 Ups & 2 Downs From "Variant"

2. Up - Eugene's Confession

The Walking Dead Variant Eugene Daryl
AMC

Having been a coward since his introduction with Abraham and Rosita back in the fourth season, Eugene is not one to comfortably jump into danger if the situation calls for it. However, he did just that in easily one of the episode's biggest highlights.

Despite his friends' attempts to protect him and find Max, Eugene finally walks out of the safety of the church and leaves Rosita in tears as he asks her to put his faith in him. Walking into the precinct, Eugene is arrested and confronts Mercer and tells him that he acted alone, saving the one person they both care deeply about.

The final few episodes that remain appear to give each character their shining moments, and this is no exception as Eugene exudes confidence and control in a way that he has never portrayed before. Always having to rely on others to save his own skin, it seems as though he has finally learned from his past allies and current friendships to stand for someone else for a change.

Josh McDermitt has always given the southern gentleman entertaining scenes filled with terror and intelligence, but he was able to give his arc in Variant a satisfying and honourable conclusion that would have even made good ol' Abraham proud.
