The Walking Dead Season 11 Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs From "Rendition"
6. UP: It Brilliantly Subverts Expectations
Honestly, Rendition watches like one big plot twist from which there's no escape. It's brilliantly unpredictable, and wastes no time pulling the rug from under you.
First, it opens in the woods, as Daryl is forced to flee the Reapers' assault with Dog, only for the pair to get ambushed and attacked further down the line. Dog almost looks like he's going to bite the dust, and Daryl loses his crossbow. Then, shock of shocks, his old flame Leah is revealed to be a Reaper.
And all of this happens before the opening credits!
The rest of the episode works wonders to keep up this unpredictability. Daryl spends his time as a captive concocting a lie to keep his friends safe, despite being tortured for information, and then he almost gets burnt to death in a test set up by Pope to see if he can join the team.
By the end of the episode, Pope's intentions are crystal clear, and Daryl is deemed "part of the family." What this means for Daryl's future remains to be seen, but there's no doubt Rendition does a great job of keeping you guessing and making Daryl's connection to the Reapers feel like an exciting new development.
