Sean Pendrell was an FBI agent who assisted Mulder and Scully with lab analysis whenever they encountered something they needed to analyze. Pendrell became instantly infatuated with Scully, though his affections were never returned by the agent.

Pendrell discovered the alien computer chip that was placed inside Scully's neck after her abduction and even helped discover some of the truth about the mysterious alien-human hybrid clone named Jeremiah Smith. His work really helped Mulder and Scully multiple times throughout the show.

Sadly, Pendrell's willingness to help Scully no matter what eventually reached its tragic conclusion in 1997. Pendrell happened upon Scully in a bar where she was protecting a key witness from Syndicate assassins and offered to get them both some drinks and celebrate Scully's birthday.

But when Pendrell was returning from the bar, he noticed the Syndicate's assassin had walked into the bar and was preparing to shoot Scully.

Pendrell jumped in front of the bullets meant for Scully and died shortly afterward in the hospital. Scully never even knew Pendrell's first name before he died, but his sacrifice ensured that she would live on to help others, something which he truly believed was worth it, even at his end.
