When the X-Files return was announced, the word "reboot" popped up a fair bit, but 1013 and Fox quickly shot that down. The new episodes would be a continuation, a 'revival' - not a reboot. That allowed fans to breathe a hefty sigh of relief. However, make no mistake - plans were (and perhaps still are) in place to continue the show, with or without Mulder and Scully. Robbie Amell (The Flash) and Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) have been cast as new agents, and word was, they were to take the reigns from Mulder and Scully in a Next Generation style continuation if things worked as planned. For whatever reason, those plans seem to have been toned down: Mills and Einstein (the new agents) were supposed to come in as part of a backdoor pilot, but when asked about that by TVLine, Chris Carter simply stated that they only had the existing six episode deal. Of course, that doesn't mean a spin-off couldn't take place in future anyway, but for now, the focus is on the original cast. With this in mind, however, there's a good chance you may see the start of a new conspiracy - something not as linked to Mulder, his sister, and his family overall, but rather a plot device to allow these new agents to take over the reigns. Then again, if Anderson and Duchovny do opt to return for new episodes past these six, anything could happen - and either way, the truth is still out there.
