Pizzolatto stuck to his guns: he said TD is a simple story and he was telling the truth - there was no game-changing twist or shocking moment that would live on in infamy. We were tricked into believing the end would be miserable and depressing. Thats why it came as a shock we received a simple, happy ending. I just feel its simplicity may prevent it from transcending to a level of memorability Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones currently reside on. Remember that earlier question - was the portal Rust saw real or another hallucination? Bear with us here, but what if the portal was real and inside it was the Yellow King? In the series most pivotal moment, Rust had not lost his mind - what he was seeing was real; it would answer any questions about the cult. Imagine your reaction if Marty ran in to see his partner teleported to another dimension. The remainder of the episode plays similar to the finale: Marty is injured by Errol, but he manages to kill him, and he wakes up in the hospital with his family by his side. Detectives Papania and Gilbough question him, but then this is where it changes. They reveal Cohle is in the hospital in a coma. Somehow he was transported back. Marty interrogates Rust outside the hospital, but Rust ignores his questions, and just like the ending, he finds his moment of peace and the two leave together. The camera pans ups to the sky only its not what you think. Instead of bright stars against the black night, the sky is brighter with black stars across. Either Rust, or Marty, or both are now trapped in Carcosa. The real Carcosa. You may be thinking this is total nonsense, yet whats funny is that this alternate ending was on Pizzolattos mind. In a recent interview he states;
I even had an idea where something more mysterious happened to them, where they vanished into the unknown and Gilbough and Papania had to clean up the mess and nobody knows what happens to them. Or it could have gone full-blown supernatural.
