True Detective Season 2: Everything We Know So Far
5. As Will Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn
A compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. That is the description offered for Ray Velcoro, who will be played by Colin Farrell, and is also said to deal with anger and drug problems. It sounds as though Farrell has landed one of the most complex roles on the show, in the antihero-type role that has been explored a great deal in the past few years, including by McConaughey last season. Farrell won a Golden Globe for his performance in In Bruges, and should bring real quality to the role of a morally ambiguous character. He has also grown a rather epic moustache, which is always a bonus. The biggest reaction when it came to casting, or indeed anything to do with True Detective season 2, was the announcement that Vince Vaughn would be playing the antagonist, Frank Semyon. A thug turned businessman, his character description describes him as: a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. It is not the kind of role normally associated with Vaughn, a comedic actor, and more recently a failed comedic actor, but it is worth considering where McConaughey was a few years ago. Pizzolatto reportedly had Vaughn in mind while writing the part, and this could be just the sort of challenge he needs as an actor. It may well be terrible, especially based on his recent work, but with strong writing theres reason to believe he can pull it off, and we could even have a Vaughnaissance (as no one will be saying) on our hands.

A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
