Twin Peaks: The Return Premiere Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

Ups...

7. It's Darker & More Surreal Than Before

Twin Peaks Dale Cooper
Showtime

It's difficult to fathom a new Twin Peaks being much weirder than the original show, but the first four episodes essentially see Lynch and co-writer Mark Frost vomiting their most twisted, f****ed up and straight-up bizarre ideas onto the screen.

It doesn't all seem to make much sense yet, but the quirkier tone of the original series takes a back seat to an overall bleaker tenor, and scenes so surreal they feel more like art installations than works of narration fiction.

In just four episodes Lynch has made arguably the strangest work of his career, and with another fourteen to go, it's safe to say he's probably going to take it to places fans can't even imagine right now.
