Twin Peaks: The Return Premiere Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

4. There's Nudity & Gore This Time

Twin Peaks Madeline Zima
Showtime

The original Twin Peaks series aired on ABC, and owing to their own content restrictions, David Lynch had to keep things fairly clean from a sex and violence perspective. The Return is airing on Showtime, though, where R-rated content is both allowed and welcome.

Lynch takes advantage of this early on, with several nude females adorning the screen, not to mention a number of grotesque corpses doused in gore. It's clear that Showtime has taken a hands-off approach with Lynch and simply let him deliver exactly what he wants to, and he's decided to make the third season much more raw, graphic and unpleasant than the original.

It's pretty jarring at first, but placing arbitrary content restrictions on an artist as singular as Lynch can never be a good idea. Here, there's not much excuse if it ends up sucking.
