Westworld: Ranking Every Main Character From Worst To Best
4. Man In Black
The most complex character on the show, the Man in Black or William is a human who has been visiting the park for years in search of finding something 'true' he can't discover in the real world.
William was a kind man when he first arrived in the park, but over the course of his stay a darkness took over him that let the previously good man touch into his most violent and sadistic tendencies. While he's out of the park he's an altruistic philanthropist and when he's in the park he's a monster.
William's sanity has wavered over the course of the seasons as he begins to question his own reality and wonder if he himself is a host. This question continues to haunt him after he murders his own daughter who he thought was a host as well. Ed Harris has a brilliant intensity that makes his increasing insanity all the more compelling.
William's backstory and transformation is the backbone of the whole show and the atrocities he committed on Maeve and Dolores are large cornerstones for those two characters.
Considering how important and necessary he seems, it was a shame to see him take a backseat in Season Three and seemingly be killed off by a host version of himself. Ed Harris as the Man in Black clearly has a future on this show but William apparently may not. That would be a massive mistake as it really feels like his storyline needed more closure than that.
