My Name Is Earl centres around a man who writes a list of every person he has wronged and does his best to rectify his mistakes. The studio execs thought the series was too crass and said the fifth season would be given the thumbs up if the vulgar humour was toned down. The producer refused, leading to the show's cancellation.

This decision upset fans because there were two burning questions; Did Earl finish his list and did we ever learn who was the father of Earl's adopted son, Earl Jr?

According to the creator, Greg Garcia, Earl Jr's father was meant to be a celebrity "like Dave Chappelle" who came to town for a gig and slept with Earl's partner, Joy.

In the last episode, the title character bumps into someone who has a list just like Earl. Not only that, Earl is one of the people on the list! Earl realises that trying to fix his mistakes inspired other people across the country to create their own lists. Realising that he had brought more good to the world than bad, Earl tears up his list.
