Why Every Modern Companion Left Doctor Who
3. Mandip Gill - Yasmin Khan
Despite an underwhelming start in series 11, Yaz Khan really came into her own by the end. Falling in love with the Thirteenth Doctor, Yaz - and Mandip Gill as a performer - gave us something we hadn't seen before in Doctor Who. Indeed, that relationship meant that Yaz's departure could only really happen alongside the Thirteenth Doctor's regeneration, tempting as it would be to see her reaction to Jodie Whittaker turning into David Tennant!
Reflecting on Yaz's goodbye in Doctor Who, Mandip Gill said:
"The TARDIS scene, that's not acting. That's actually just me crying. It was really emotional, it was beautiful, and it was written so well."
Besides the emotional story reasons for her depature, Mandip Gill's departure was also tied into the show clearing house before a new, as-yet undisclosed showrunner would take over. Except, of course, that this new showrunner was an old showrunner, Russell T Davies, who wanted their own companions.
