Karen Gillan decided the time was right as an actor to leave Doctor Who behind in 2012, departing alongside Arthur Darvill in The Angels Take Manhattan. Amy's departure from Doctor Who was a collaboration of sorts between Gillan and showrunner Steven Moffat.

"It was a mutual decision" she told press backstage at the National Television Awards in early 2012. After informing Steven Moffat of her desire to leave, the two "opened up about where [they] were at with it and then came to the conclusion that this was the best time to go."

It was certainly the best time to go for Gillan, whose career has gone from strength to strength ever since, with roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Jumanji franchise, alongside her own directorial efforts.
