Why Every Modern Companion Left Doctor Who

Reflecting on his departure in a 2023 interview with Radio Times, Arthur Darvill revealed that he never believed he'd be on the show for as long as he did. Indeed, he kept "waiting to be killed at any point but it didn't happen". Well it did, Arthur, several times in fact, they just kept bringing you back from the dead! Clearly, nobody wanted to let Arthur Darvill go, but eventually those discussions were had.

Like Karen Gillan, Darvill remembers the conversations about the Ponds' departure as being quite collaborative, saying:

"...it was real testament to the kind of nurturing nature and caring nature of the producers and writers. It felt like a family, so that was good being involved in that in that conversation."

Those conversations ultimately gave us what Arthur Darvill describes as a "perfect" ending.
