Why Supergirl Just Got Cancelled
3. The Delays
That brings us to one of the most likely reasons behind the decision to end Supergirl now, the very one that Deadline itself made reference to in its official report: the delays in production that the show has faced over the past few months.
Like its Arrowverse counterparts, the show was forced to shut down production earlier this year because of the ongoing global situation. It wrapped up just shy of its Season 5 finale, with the 19th episode serving as its concluding instalment instead - and it worked incredibly well, by the way.
While the other shows have all faced the same delays that Supergirl has due to everything going on over the last six months, Melissa Benoist's pregnancy understandably factored into why the show was absent from The CW's 2021 schedule. Much of the cast and crew have returned to Vancouver and production is set to resume very soon, but Supergirl still won't be airing on screens until at least next spring (while most of the others return in January).
With all that in mind and with everything going on at the moment, it's totally understandable that the producers, creative team and Benoist decided to bring the show to a close. Not only does it result in less pressure to meet the demands of the ambitious fall-spring schedule, it allows them to take more time with what is now the final season.
