Why Supergirl Just Got Cancelled
2. A New Era For The Arrowverse
Arrow may have kicked off the Arrowverse but, in a way, Supergirl has been every bit as important to it. While that show changed the superhero landscape and launched a whole universe, it was the Girl of Steel who paved the way for this long overdue renaissance of female superheroes on the small screen - breaking ground in the same way that Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman did four decades prior.
In the five years that followed its debut, we got more female-led programming in the genre and female-led movies like Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel and Birds of Prey.
The Arrowverse now has Batwoman and Stargirl as primarily female-led shows while Superman and Lois and DC's Legends of Tomorrow are co-headlined by women as well. There's a solid chance that will grow further if potential Arrow spinoff Green Arrow and The Canaries gets picked up.
Like Arrow, Supergirl has had an incredible impact on the superhero landscape. However, also like Arrow, part of that journey is the ending. And thus, it makes sense that the groundbreaking Girl of Steel is the first to follow in the Emerald Archer's footsteps by wrapping up an equally incredible run.
