10 UFC Fighters Who Lost To Surprising Opponents
7. Warlley Alves Def. Colby Covington
Despite being a terrible human being by all accounts, there's no denying that Colby "Chaos" Covington can fight.
A former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion and current #1 Contender in the division, Covington has made a name for himself with his unmatched cardio, his top-tier grappling, and his insufferable heel persona. Thus far, only two fighters have managed to defeat Covington across his 17 pro fights. While he most recently lost to Kamaru Usman, he lost to a surprising opponent in Warlley Alves early into his UFC career.
On the prelims of UFC 194 on December 12, 2015, Alves and Covington would put both of their undefeated streaks on the line against one another. Not only did Alves win the bout; he won by Guillotine Choke one minute and 26 seconds into the first round. To this day, it's the most one-sided loss on Covington's record.
Following this monumental victory, Alves would lose two straight to Bryan Barbarena and Kamaru Usman. He currently holds a still-impressive record of 14-4, but he remains unranked among UFC Welterweights. Covington, meanwhile, would go on to win 7 straight, including an Interim Welterweight Championship victory over Rafael Dos Anjos. Apart from Alves, his only loss came against the aforementioned Usman, and to be fair, he's beaten pretty much everyone at this point.
While "Chaos" is next in line for a Welterweight Championship opportunity, Alves remains on the prelims. Still, this writer would love to see him choke Colby out once more for good measure.
