The Edge/Randy Orton battle for the Intercontinental Championship was a bit of a polarising event. Many who witnessed the 27-minute back-and-forth match hailed it as an all-timer, while those more critical were a bit miffed by Orton's use of a great many restholds to stall for time.

In any event, the Hartford crowd was hanging on every near-fall down the stretch, and exploded when Edge ended Orton's seven-month reign with the belt.

Elsewhere on the card, Chris Benoit retained the World Heavyweight title in another great match with Triple H, and Batista received a breakout win over a helpful Chris Jericho. There were also a little character development moments for Eugene, whose push seemingly knew no bounds in the summer of 2004.
